Weller Raisin River Room Wedding

Gretchen & Dale’s Saline, Michigan wedding photography at Wellers Raisin River Room.
May 30th, 2015

So what are a bride and groom to do when their wedding day is by turns storming, threatening, steamy hot and back to down pouring again? Wellers had gorgeous grounds for weddings and frankly, there was just no way it looked feasible to have their wedding outside and be able to take advantage of the beautiful setting. Gretchen really was game for it up until the very last minute, but practicality won out. The ground was thoroughly saturated, the river was swollen and her lovely white dress would have become a mud soaked sponge in no time.

Because Gretchen and Dale had a first look (can you spot the real one and the fake one?!), we were able to get some quick family photos done outside as well as some couples shots in between the storms that just kept pounding Michigan. A note to photographers and couples looking at using Wellers Raisin River Room in Saline, Michigan. This room is very cool looking, very intimate and also one of the most challenging wedding venues to photograph. I’ve shot weddings here often and now how to manage the lighting, but even having the wedding moved indoors to a small area in what is typically the dance floor area (the majority of guests stayed seated at their tables) was a challenge. Here are the technical issues… the ceilings are black, so the light does not bounce or travel far. The black ceilings also have large beams, so any light you do put out will be immediately stopped from spreading by the beams. There are multiple kinds of natural lighting going on. Some is incandescent, some is more florescent, some is natural and some is halogen! Needless to say, the lighting set for where the bride and groom typically are seated is fine when the lights are fully up. The fall off to the guests seating just to the right or left of that one area is quite dramatic, very directional from overhead (lots of shadows on peoples faces) and very red which is hard to tone. You can see in the wedding photo of the toast that the area looks nice in that center area… not too hard to color correct. So you’ll need to use a LOT of off camera lighting, not just bounced. You’ll need a LOT of batteries (the walls had water streaming down them and half their plugs just weren’t working that day… not typical, but with a very old building, who knows!). So anybody out there looking for a wedding photographer for this unique and charming venue, make sure they have a lot of tricks in their lighting bag… they’ll need every last one of them! I was extremely fortunate to be working with a laid back couple AND my favorite ally / DJ, Michigan Wedding DJ, Dan Nichols who made sure I was able to do what needed to be done before moving on. That’s a huge help on a technically challenging wedding venue.

Congratulations to Gretchen and Dale. They pulled off this wedding with style!

Having Kids in Wedding…

And sometimes it really is about the kids! Danielle and Jeremy’s fun and unique wedding day (I’ll just have to blog about Danielle’s royal blue wedding dress another day!) featured kids. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. They love kids and as many wedding couples who decide to have kids in their wedding party, they were up for whatever happened. They’d already rolled with the news their church’s renovations wouldn’t be completed on time and had their ceremony partially under a tent out back. They’d already had to move their wedding reception to a different location and they dealt with the surprise heat that appeared with no access to air conditioning. So while the day went really smoothly (Danielle is an uber planner!), I thought the flower girl, Adeline and the ring bearer Henry deserved their photographic due.

Twin Lakes Wedding Photography – Gina & Trevor

Twin Lakes Golf Course Wedding Photography –

Perhaps the greatest compliment of my career is that Gina had me picked out as her wedding photographer years before she met her charming and sweet husband, Trevor! This wonderfully well balanced and mature couple (not in years, but in how they are in the world and with each other) were a joy to spend the day with. While the final wedding photography take ended up at an astounding 1,900+ photos, the day flew by. Here are just a few of the many photos I loved from their day.

Detroit Preemie Baby Photographer – Marci Curtis –

Welcome to the world, baby HH! One of the true perks of being a wedding photographer based in Metro Detroit is that I get to take photos of all my clients again with their newborn babies. In HH’s case, he was a preemie (by a month), so his photographer shoot was delayed just a bit until he was three weeks old. Is there anything different or challenging about taking Detroit preemie baby photos? Well, no. Every infant baby photography session is conducted with extreme care to germs, providing extra warmth, making small, calm movements and with safety in mind at all times.

Sometimes my favorite baby photos aren’t taken in the studio at all, but while the baby’s needs are being tended to.

Baby HH is happy, healthy and for his photo shoot he was also very, very sleepy! As you’ve seen from most of my other baby photography shoots, most of the newborns I photograph are wide awake! This was the first time in years I’ve had an infant actually sleep for the majority of the photography session. Is it because he was a preemie? Maybe. But more likely, he takes after his incredibly mellow parents!

Then & Now – Marci Curtis {Detroit Wedding Photojournalist}

I decided last week that I “needed” to have my personal photos updated. It had been a decade since my wonderful photographer hubby (and back up shooter) Rodney Curtis (www.rodneycurtis.com) had been allowed to take any formal photos of me. Like many photographers I know, not too many of us like being in front of the camera. My comfort zone has always been behind the camera.

I was worried that my “old” photos might misrepresent me to my Detroit, Michigan wedding couples. I am youngish, hipish and plenty silly. But were these “old” photos of me disingenuous? Would prospective wedding couples worry about my gray streak? Would my naturally wildly curly hair make me look at first glance more like a homeless bag lady than a first rate and well loved wedding photographer?

After seeing the take of photos, I was very pleasantly surprised. Guess what? I didn’t look THAT different! Here are the now and then photos of me, Marci Curtis – Detroit Wedding Photojournalist.

Before and after photos taken 10 years apart.

Photos taken a decade apart.

So yes, the hair has steaks of gray and the skin has added some wrinkles. But who (other than our own narcissistic selves) would notice those things? I’ve done a LOT of living in the past decade and am a pretty happy person to have come through everything fairly unchanged. I’ve earned these gray hairs and after a day of shooting weddings, I’ve earned the right to look like a crazy bag lady! I work incredibly hard and if I show up in that crazy uncle’s photo (there is one at every wedding who insists on taking photos of the photographer), that’s okay with me. I do look like a wind blown, red faced chick who’s been crawling in the mud since that pretty much describes what a real wedding photographer does on a daily basis!

Marci Curtis – Before and After 10 years apart!

For anyone who is panicked about getting their Linked In or work or Facebook photos updated, take the plunge! It’s actually very empowering to see how you look through the eyes of a knowledgable and talented photographer. Forget focusing on your “flaws” and celebrate all the things that come through a great portrait; energy, sparkle and great sense of self. That’s what I see 10 years later.

Being seen as you really appear to others is actually kind of fun and a relief! I’d been dreading seeing how I look “in real life” for so long that it’s actually a nice reward to see that a decade of raising teenagers, shooting another 500 weddings, watching our family struggle through cancer and well… just living… hasn’t taken quite the toll I’d thought it had!
