Fantastic Wedding Photojournalist

We found Marci via her online reputation, and couldn't have been more fortunate in finding a wedding photographer. She had our photos (1600+) to us within a week of the wedding (!!!). The day of our wedding was absurdly hot (97F) and our photos were outside - she was thoughtful enough to send an e-mail the night before reminding us to bring water, extra clothes, etc, and worked with us to make sure we got awesome pictures despite the heat/sun. She knew our venue extremely well (Henry Ford Museum / photos in Greenfield Village), so we could find the best spots quickly. She's funny, puts you at ease and is a joy to work with. We cannot recommend her more highly.

Detroit Based Michigan Wedding Photojournalist  |   Candid Portfolio of Wedding Day Moments

So if you've been clicking around my website for a while, you might be starting to wonder about the difference between most of these wedding galleries and portfolios. A LOT of them show candid moments, but I seem to be calling them different things. Why is that?

Well... different people call this style of non posed wedding photography by different things. Having been a working photojournalist at newspapers for the first 10 years of my career, I prefer to call candid style photography "wedding photojournalism".

This refers to capturing moments as they happen. Fleeting expressions, situations that are unfolding and seeing and documenting those things that happen in a blink of an eye. Most people even standing nearby miss these moments that flash by in a millisecond. Personally, I thing all these tiny things are what showcase the personalities, the flavor of the wedding day and all the bits that make a wedding day so very unique to each couple.

Slowly, but surely, this style of wedding industry has become the most popular style of photography. While it may be popular and many photography companies offer "candid style wedding photography", what they can't offer is the ability to become invisible enough that everyone forgets I'm there and they just enjoy their day without feeling like the paparazzi is there.

Another thing that real photojournalists can do is that we can be patient and are happy to wait for the moment to come. We don't force things and are happiest just watching through our lenses for everything to unfold. You know when to anticipate things and you know enough to keep looking behind you to see what you might be missing. You also don't take your eyes off the couple, the room, the guest and anything else that might contribute to your wedding day story.

Thanks for looking through my wedding photojournalism portfolio and hope you'll check out more galleries while you're here.

Long before I even considered getting engaged, I knew that I wanted to have a wedding photographer with a photojournalist background shoot at my wedding—because they are experts with subjects with lots of movement. (Plus, constantly photographing the same two subjects in contrasting colors is TOUGH!) So because of my particular, non-negotiable requests, I didn’t have a lot of options, but Marci happened to be one of those options.
From the first “hey, are you busy on this date?” message, Marci provided a lot of insight for me, which helped me further be comfortable with the decision to do business with her. As we got closer to the date, she provided even more insight about wedding days (beyond just snapping photos) that helped me be more organized. Of course she’d have this insight for being in the business for two decades! If you love long, detailed emails filled with advice for your wedding day, Marci is your person!
Marci went even more above and beyond than one could imagine. On the day of our wedding, she was the only photographer, working with a videographer from another company, traveling to six different places (women/men’s separate getting ready areas, the church, the hall and two other personal locations) for pictures and stayed for nearly 10 hours—all while dealing with variety of dramatic, anxious and curious personalities of my very large family.
The end result was almost 3,500 photos that made it so hard to narrow down to post on social (which is a lot considering that my husband and I are self-conscious about getting photographed)!
And within the huge batch of photos, she made close to two dozen different backgrounds of our outside shots (versions requested by my mom) and added some spotlight glow behind my veil at the alter.
In other words, MARCI IS AWESOME! Thank you again!
