If you're looking for a fun, relaxed way to get family portraits shot, look no further. My approach is quite different from other Michigan portrait family photographers I've met. I try to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all your family members and get your input so the family photos look and feel like your family really does. Sick of family photographers bossing you around or creating stiff and overly posed family photographs? I'm a Detroit based family photographer who actually likes and thrives on the unpredictability of your family dynamics. Yes, I'll take the nice formal family photos. But I also really enjoy capturing informal family photographs. I like the family portraits to have that spontaneous feel. Most of my family photography sessions include children, which we all know are rarely on their best behavior when it comes time to take family portraits! So why not approach the photography session with an open mind and an open heart. Less pressure always means better children's photographs. I try to build in breaks, move through things quickly so the child photography part is an enjoyable as humanly possible. If we all agree to work at their pace and celebrate how they are at that particular stage in life, I'll be able to create some really unique and fun child portraits. It's great to have at the very least a mental list of tricks and toys and things the kids like to do so we can quickly shift to plan b, c, d, etc. Most children have an attention span for getting their photos taken of about 45 seconds, so a good child photographer can and should be willing to be flexible enough to keep up with an every changing subject. Children's photography is fun, exciting and wildly unpredictable. Most often the photos the families like the best are the ones they never thought of or planned. It's not the photo of the kid in the Santa hat, it's the photo of the child undecorating the tree that ends up being the great surprise. Outdoor and park like settings are great for both candid family photos as well as kids photography. I try to get the "must have" family photos out of the way and then work towards the candid photos so if big park toys end up in the photos, families will count those photographs as gravy. If we do need to stay at your home, I set up lights at your home, creating a studio in the house. That's very helpful when shooting children (with a camera, of course!). The less intrusive I can be, the better the photographs of your children. My only rule is; if nobody's having fun anymore, then we have to stop. Nobody looks good when they're not having fun! And believe it or not, that usually kicks in right around the hour mark. So my kids photography approach is to make this a positive and enjoyable experience.
