Seriously Fun Baby Photography

You want photos done right away of your precious newborn baby. You know they're changing so quickly, but you're also exhausted and overwhelmed and the idea of navigating a baby photography session just sounds like too much. That's where I come in.

I have a 90 degree baby studio set up at my home. You bring the babe, some of your favorite things and then just plop. I'm happy to take care of you and the baby and just have some fun getting to know your little one and how they are in the world. Babies really don't get the whole pressure of the shoot. They are terrible at time management and just can't seem to do things on schedule. So I don't time these sessions. They get to call ALL the shots. When they need a break, we take one. Their needs come ahead of ours, just like they will be forevermore.

Most clients have a few items they've either found on Etsy or gifts they want incorporated into the session, and I have some good old standbys here as well. Since everyone's idea of what they want is totally different, I encourage you to bring props with you. I'll take it from there. I try to do more natural baby posing that shows their personality instead of relying of photoshop to create images that no baby can possible do in nature, nor will I dangle them from things that might put them in jeopardy.

If you have an older sibling and want to incorporate them into the shoot, it's almost always easier on the older sibling if we make it a lifestyle shoot at your home. Firstborns are usually still adjusting to losing their "only" status and their schedules are messed up and they often just aren't themselves during this time of adjustment. So I find that the more we can try to keep things the same for them, the better the photos. Often when clients arrive, the oldest child has never actually held the baby before, so you can see that this might induce full on panic / indifference / clumsiness and just about every other version of something you'd rather not have photographed! I take things very slowly and try to make this a fun, positive experience for their interactions together.

If you are looking to make this a baby and family photography session, you will need to book the two hour ish (again, not exactly a timed session, but the more people I add into photos, the more work I have to do afterwards to get as many great photos as I can). I'm happy to come to your home and set up a portable studio so we can get more candid photos as well as some of the formal ones. I also bring backdrops to create wonderful newborn photos.

$400 - 1 hourish photo shoot in my Troy studio. Most babies can tolerate a maximum of 3 outfits before completely losing their marbles.

OPTION #2

$700 - 2 hourish photo shoot with family and/or siblings. This one takes a while to cajole everyone into various groupings and needs a couple of different attempts before the sibling feels comfortable with what's going on and what we're all asking them to do. This shoot can be on location in your home.

Tips For Great Baby Shoots

I try to photograph newborns sessions when they are around the week - two week stage. Why? Glad you asked. Babies often have jaundice, cradle cap and baby eczema that often clears up at about the one week mark. After two weeks, they start to wake up a bit more (and have very strong opinions about changing their clothes and laying still) and they often start to develop baby acne around that time. If you're later than that, don't sweat it! I've photographed "newborns" as old as 6 months and they are hilarious. So don't sweat it if you missed the two week mark. But if you're planning ahead, that's the optimal time in my humble opinion.

Have the baby already dressed in their first outfit. If you're driving to my studio and you're worried about them having a spit up accident on the way over, just cover them in a cloth so it won't land on them. This will minimize the number of changes you'll need to do. Changing babies is tantamount to baby torture (at least according to them!). They hate getting naked and for some reason having things pulled over their heads must remind them of the birth canal or something. Seriously, it's like they're having flashbacks! It almost always results in a melt down. So try to limit their outfit changes to two more after we're done with the one they arrive in. If you want lots of naked baby shots (and who doesn't?) and you're driving here, please fit a blanket around them before strapping them into the car seat. Otherwise, they'll have strap marks all over their body for at least half an hour!

Bring lots of diapers and lots of food. If you're nursing, I nursed for 4 straight years (was TERRIFIED to start over... chapped, cracked nipples are the absolute worst!), so I'm super happy to have you nursing here. If they are formula kids, they might actually conk out after a bottle and we might actually get some of those iconic "drunk", sleepy baby photos!

Have some cute hats and bows and headbands? Bring them. Just don't be too shocked if you're baby finds them scratchy and hates them. It's the number two trigger for making babies super unhappy. You'll see plenty of photos in the gallery with them on, so obviously it's doable, just know most babies loathe them and they are fantastic about communicating this to the world.

Parents often like to either jump in a few photos or have some of their body parts incorporated into the photos. Please wear SHORT sleeved shirts (so I can use your arms) and you might want to bring an extra shirt just in case. Moms typically are the ones who end up getting spit up on during a session JUST before I photograph them.
